Welcome to the 42-Dominoes Blog

Hi all 42 players! I've started this blog to have a place to discuss ideas about playing the great game of 42. I have a few ideas for future topics, and I would entertain guest postings as well.

For now, leave your thoughts in the comments of a post.

The guys I play with believe that one can bid past 82. I thought 82 was the maximum bid. How high can one bid on any hand??

I have been playing win42 for several years. It has been the only computer game that keeps my interest. Is it possible to download win42 to my smartphone? Then I could play anywhere.

Yes, I have a tablet and would love an android version for my tablet so that I could play 42 with friends anywhere I can take the tablet. Please consider adding this.

Barebones without any variations does not restrict anyone from bidding any bid he wants. It’s just that the 30 bid has no specific attached meaning to it---a player with three doubles is fully allowed to bid 30, as long as his partner and the other players at the table understands that the 30 bidder has not attached the meaning of “I have three doubles” (or a good helping hand) to his thirty bid. And because he hasn’t attached that meaning, his partner cannot actually know what may be in his partner’s hand. Likewise, no domino is being “outlawed” from playing by stripping the high-end telling variation from being attached to Barebones 42. If a person wants to play 51 or any other domino of his choice at first opportunity of missing suit, he is allowed to do so---as long as it is understood that no telling of one’s double is being transmitted to his partner. By close observation of how the players are playing over a number of hands or games, it can readily be discerned whether opponents are employing telling (talking across the board) 42 by seeing if a domino was played to tell his partner what double was done contrary to what usual good playing of the hand dictates.
Telling 42, as the name implies, is playing 42 in which players by whatever schemes chosen to do so, tell their partners something about their hands apart from logical inferring and deducing, a talking across the board informing your partner something about your hand.
There are many ways an advocate of telling (talking across the board) one’s partner something about his hand that isn’t derived from just seeing the dominoes in your hand and those played trick by trick as the bid plays out. In live play, you could pull on your right earlobe to tell your partner you have 66, pull on your left earlobe to indicate you have 55, clear your throat to mean you have 44, scratch your nose to show that you have 33, cross your legs to show you have 22 and so forth. Or you just openly tell say to your partner where everyone one at the table can hear it (or type it in the chat box if playing online): “I have double-five. If you have a five-off, lead it!” Is any of this cheating? No, it’s not cheating as long as everyone at the table knows what’s going on by the various schemes used to transmit information and has agreed to play at the table where such is going on. It’s this player’s contention that telling one’s partner what doubles you have in your hand or that you have three or more doubles is a departure from 42 as the game was played in earlier decades and that this telling 42 is a corruption of 42, a contaminating variation just as inimical to the game as sevens or three ways of playing Nello being layered onto the pure game of 42.
The raison d'ĂȘtre for “telling 42” is to tell what doubles are in one’s hand---bypassing what makes 42 the great game that it is---the figuring out what best to play by deducing and inferring from the dominoes in your own hand and those played by others at the table. “Oh” the indicator might say, “but I logically infer and deduce from having seen how my partner played in the past, that when he plays a domino at first opportunity it means he has the double to that suit. So having logically inferred and deduced that, I naturally come back with my off of that suit and let my partner catch it.” Such is the sophistry of a determined teller. Just a clever attempt at justifying unethical telling what is in one’s hand.
